Reiki has traditionally been taught in small classes comprising a reiki master, passing on the reiki tradition to new practitioners and at the same time conducting reiki attunements for these new students.

10-15 years ago this was the only method available for learning reiki. Even though in many cases you often had to travel to another city to meet up with a reiki master it was a nice method of learning and ensured that the reiki tradition was passed down from a master to a student in a relatively ordered manner. Since the advent of the internet it is now possible to attend reiki classes and course online from the comfort of your own home.

The initial Reiki system was developed by Dr Usui in Japan, and most reiki practitioners will have had training in Usui reiki. As time went by new forms of reiki began to emerge as additional attunements were discovered by reiki masters who decided to then share these new attunements and symbols with their own students.

Additional symbols come from Tibetan reiki and Karuna reiki and although the energy delivered by these additional symbols is subtly different one can feel confident that the source of the energy is still reiki at its core. My personal belief is that there are probably still more reiki symbols yet to be uncovered, and it would be arrogant to attest that one reiki is better than another. In fact I have never heard a reiki practitioner claim one form of reiki better than another. All reiki is good and useful, and it is a matter for the personal preference of the reiki practitioner if they wish to incorporate more finder tuned symbols into their practices and their reiki courses.

If you are unable to personally attend a reiki class – perhaps because of poor health, lack of reiki masters in your area, or for whatever reason – I would recommend attending a reiki online course. With an online reiki course you can actually attune yourself right up to the level of Reiki master and all in a very short time period. Although I enjoyed very much the teaching of my reiki master in New Zealand, the most important goal is to become attuned to reiki and start using this wonderful energy as soon as possible.
