When someone learns reiki what they are in effect doing is learning where to place the hands on different parts of the body to best direct energy that will bring about physical and emotional healing.
Ok so you can learn where to place the hands when learning reiki, however this a little bit more to it than that. You need to be attuned to the energy in order for the reiki energy to pass from your hands to the recipient of the energy.
Reiki attunements are normally done by a Reiki Master in a one-on-one session. The attunement involves “activating” the ability for energy to flow through the individual. Its like applying lubricant to a tap that won’t open. Once the tap can open water will flow from the tap – and it is the same with Reiki energy. Once the attunement has been done then energy can pass through the Reiki practitioner and out their hands to the recipient.

It is important to remember that being able to transmit or deliver Reiki energy is the process of turning on the tap. The Reiki practitioner is just like the tap that delivers water – the tap is not water, just the mechanism to deliver the water. And it is the same with the Reiki practitioner – the practitioner holds no special powers nor are they generating the energy themselves. They are simply transmitting the energy.
